Hunting in Hungary
Hungary stands out as a unique hunting destination where tradition meets modern hospitality.
Unlike in most western and central European countries, hunting is still an important part of Hungarian culture, society and daily life. In the countryside you will find almost nobody, who isn’t involved in hunting directly in some form, or via a family member. Also hunting is recognized as an important income stream, therefore hunting guests are specially welcome and even many luxury hotels offer special treatment for them.
What sets Hungary apart – for us – from other great hunting destinations, such as Poland, or Romania, is the fact that you need several thousand hectares of land for your own hunting area, which leads to most hunting areas being professionally managed by big forestry companies, employing professional hunters and offering high standard accomodations.
You can hunt for wild boar, roes deer, red deer, fallow deer, mufflon, the occasional fox or jackal crossing path during stalking.
During the last years organized walked-up shoots for pheasant and grouse also became more and more popular. Here we are proud to be able to offer the only bird hunts on classic English standards, featuring exclusive accomodation, elevenses – and most important – high numbers of birds in the drives.
The terrain in Hungary, as well as the ways of hunting offers something for every type of hunter. You can enjoy the rolling hills around lake Balaton, open landscape, huge forests, or the wide, open flat area – the famous Puszta – of Eastern Hungary.
As Hungary has a long history and rich culture, it is also the perfect country to visit not just for a hunt, beautiful landscapes, or refreshing swims in one of its lakes and rivers during the summer time, but also to enjoy hundreds of years of great architecture, the opera or a classical concert.
We are happy to arrange the full experience as part of our offer!

Prerequisites
Visas
Hungary is a member of the Schengen area. Hunting guests from the European Union must have a valid passport or ID card to enter the country. The Schengen regulations are only applicable for a stay not exceeding 90 days. From certain other countries, hunters may travel to Hungary without a visa for not more than 90 days stay.
Firearms and ammunition
Hunting, sports and self-defense firearms and ammunition may be transported within the European Union by holding a European Firearms Pass.
Non EU citizens may bring their firearms and ammunition for hunting and sport shooting into the territory of Hungary or pass through the country only on the basis of a valid certificate of the acting customs authorities, if the person’s intended stay in the territory of Hungary does not exceed 90 days. The fee for issuing the certificate can be primarily paid in cash (in Hungarian forints) or by bank transfer too. The gun import document will be required to be produced upon your departure from the country therefore it needs to be kept till leaving Hungary.
You are not allowed to bring/carry any automatic or semi-automatic rifles!
The use of a moderator (silencer) for hunting has been allowed in Hungary since November 2023.
During the hunt and trip, one must be able to provide the following documents as a justification:
- the right to carry arms (with national or EU permit/pass)
- valid local hunting license and Hungarian license – arranged for you by Roe&Rifle
- the purpose of the visit (invitation letter signed) – arranged for you by Roe&Rifle
- a hunter’s liability insurance valid in Hungary – can be arranged for you by Roe&Rifle, if necessary
Trophy assessment & export
All trophies (such as roe deer, red stag, fallow buck antlers) are subject to an official assessment by a local committee and therefore cannot be immediately bagged by the hunter.
The fee for the official assessment includes a certificate of the size and CIC rating of the trophy, which will also be the reliable base for pricing. If you are a lucky one, you might also be the proud owner of a silver, or gold medal for your trophy after the assessment!
As the trophy assessment might take longer, than your stay in Hungary, Roe&Rifle will arrange the delivery and export of your trophies for you with the local hunting authorities for an additional fee, depending on the country of delivery.
